winter camping gear

Are you going winter camping because if so then this gear guide is the perfect blog for you to read. We will go over 30+ unique items that you should bring with you camping in the winter. Making sure you have the best winter camping gear is a good first step to take. One of the biggest obstacles to winter camping is obviously low temperatures so a lot of our products will help you stay at a comfortable temperature. Let’s start with the winter camping basics.

Your tent serves as your shelter and protects you from the elements, which in winter, can be extreme. Winter storms often bring high winds and heavy rain too, for this reason, you’ll need a good 4-season tent that can withstand all of it.

Winter Camping Gear: 4 Season Tents:

#1. Mountain Hardwear Outpost 2 Tent

Mountain Hardwear Outpost 2 Tent

5/5

$600.00

This is an expedition-ready 4 season tent built for long base camp adventures and cold temperatures. The D-molded entryways open and close without any problem. The 2 double covering and lattice entryways provide security during inclement weather. They also provide fantastic ventilation in most climates. All tent materials are free from fire-retardant synthetic substances. It’s very roomy for a 2 person shleter and has space to cook or store extra gear.

#2. Mountain Hardwear Trango 2 Tent

Mountain Hardwear Trango 2 Tent

5/5

$700.00

The Mountain Hardwear Trango 2 Tent is a great choice for inclement weather and spacious camping.  This tent was made for trips where a waterproof design and roomy inside are more important than having a lightweight tent. This is more of a tent for fall/winter months but it can be used in any of the 4 seasons. The tent is solid and incredibly weather resistant. However, if you need a bigger tent for a large group of people then I would go with the mountain hardwear space station tent.

#3. Exped Orion III 4-Seasons Tent

Exped Orion III Tent

4.4/5

$699.00

Camping in the winter can mean strong winter wind. The Exped Orion III has 21 different anchor points to keep the tent stable in the wind. The flooring material in a winter camping tent is also important to keep moisture out and heat inside the tent. The Orion III uses a waterproofing nylon material for the floor of the tent to keep water and moisture out. The tent is pitched at the center to maximize head space while staying compact enough for winter conditions.

#4. GEERTOP Backpacking Four Season Tent

GEERTOP Backpacking Tent for winter

4.4/5

$146.00

The inner floor is waterproof with a rubbery feel that is also present on the underside of the rainfly. I really love the size of the two doors because you won’t have to climb over each other to get out. The two doors/windows offer a cross breeze and the aluminum poles are sturdy and
were not difficult to get in place. The stakes are sturdy, it weighs just over 6 pounds making it usable for hiking and camping and other nature related activities. Plenty of room for two with gear inside and in the vestibule and we slept well despite changeable weather. Geertop really performs well. With the snow flaps, the tent maintains heat much better than any other tent I have ever used.

Winter Camping Gear: Sleeping Recommendations

#5. Mountain Hardwear Phantom 0 Sleeping Bag

Mountain Hardwear Phantom 0 Sleeping Bag

5/5

$620.00

When selecting a sleeping bag for winter camping, it’s important for the sleeping bag to be rated 10F to 15F degrees below what the coldest expected temperature will be outdoors. Bag shape also plays a role in keeping in warmth when sleeping. The Phantom 0 offers a mummy shape for improved insulation when sleeping. Where winter sleeping bags fail is when warmth is lost at the head opening of the bag. The Phantom 0 hood design helps to stay tight and close around the head to reduce heat loss. Finally, the outer material of the sleeping bag is water resistant. This helps to keep moisture from absorbing into the sleeping bag through the night.

#6. Coleman Brazos Cold Weather Sleeping Bag

Coleman Brazos Cold Weather Sleeping Bag

4.8/5

$58.76

This winter sleeping bag is inexpensive, but when it comes to keeping you warm, this bag can hold its own against bags that cost so much more. Ideal for families, who don’t have a lot to spend, or just about anyone looking to save some dollars. For the average camper looking to spend some winter nights under the stars each year, there aren’t a lot of reasons to spend more when you can get this bag at this price. My must-have winter camping item is definitely a pair of gloves. My favorite is the Hestra Army Leather Gore-TEX Short. I often bring multiple pairs to ensure I can still do everything while wearing them. Liner gloves are particularly important while working with a stove—metal is an excellent conductor of cold and can cause instant ice burn if you touch it with bare skin. Best gloves I’ve ever had for being outside in subzero-degree weather.

#12. Outdoor Research Stormtracker Heated Sensor Gloves

Outdoor Research Stormtracker Heated Sensor Gloves

Winter Camping Gear: Best Snowshoes

I have done tons of camping in different seasons since I was in my teens. One thing I never leave home without when winter camping is my snowshoes. Winter camping can be challenging when you are not properly equipped. From my experiences, there were many times where we underestimated the trek going to the campsite. Sometimes, there’s more snow than we anticipated. Additionally, most of us often look for an adventure while camping. Having snowshoes with you makes everything possible. You no longer have to worry about slipping or having a difficult time trekking. Your snowshoes take care of you that way.
