What is an ice screw?
An ice screw is a tubular piece of metal with threads that is used as protection for climbing routes that contain ice. Climbers are able to screw them into thick pieces of ice and clip into them using quickdraws to prevent falls. In this article we’ll break down the best ice screws currently available.
What are ice screws made of?
Ice screws are generally made out of steel or aluminum which keeps them light but helps them maintain strength. These materials help ice screws hold forces of up to 10 kilonewtons.
How many ice screws will you need?
A “rack” of screws as it is called is very dependent on the route you are climbing. Ice screws come in many different lengths (between 10cm and 22cm) and you’ll need to use certain length screws depending on the ice conditions present. Most climbers on moderate routes will carry between 6 to 8 ice screws to make sure they’re protected. The best ice screws on our list below come in many different sizes, so make sure you get a few different ones to build your rack.
